| The Transcendental Meditation Technique and the Reversal of Aging by Dr. Schneider | |
Dr. Robert Schneider, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.B.M.R., is an NIH-funded medical researcher and author of Total Heart Health: How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease with the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health (Basic Health Publications, 2006). Here he answers questions on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors.
Q: What about aging? Is it possible for people to age more slowly?
Dr. Schneider: Modern medicine has discovered that declines commonly seen in mental functioning, cognitive functioning and physical health as people age are not inevitable. Indeed, it is possible to age successfully, in a way that is better than the average. Yet there are not many interventions that have been shown to slow biological aging and increase the likelihood of successful aging. The most prominent intervention is a mind-body technique, the Transcendental Meditation program, which has been show to reverse many of the physiological and neuro-physiological changes associated with the aging process.
Wallace, et al, International Journal of Neuroscience (16: 53–58, 1982).
In the study shown above, older Transcendental Meditation practitioners were compared to controls. The findings revealed that older Transcendental Meditation practitioners who practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique for more than five years had biological ages twelve years younger than controls, and those Transcendental Meditation practitioners who practiced their technique for less than five years had biological ages of five years less than controls.

This study, above, was conducted at Harvard University and published in a leading psychology journal, showing that elderly individuals who practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique lived significantly longer than controls who participated in other interventions. This is quite a remarkable finding, that the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique has this distinctive effect in reversing the neuro-physiological and physiological basis of the aging process—resulting in a slowing and even reversal of the aging process as well as enhanced longevity.
