| Transcendental Meditation Helps Doctors Reduce Stress by Dr. Sands | |
Two physicians, Thomas Tomaselli, M.D., anesthesiologist, Manhattan, NY, and David Sands, M.D., a retired pediatrician, explain how they have been able to reduce stress with the Transcendental Meditation program.
Q: How has the Transcendental Meditation program helped you to reduce stress?
Dr. Thomas Tomaselli: I’ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation because as an anesthesiologist, my life is so stressful, so hectic. When I’m in the hospital I’m really in the “pit,” so to speak. The Transcendental Meditation technique allows me to get a level of rest that is just unparalleled to sleeping or anything else that you can possibly experience. I can easily find twenty minutes for myself to practice Transcendental Meditation twice a day, even with the type of lifestyle that I live in the hospital.
Dr. David Sands, M.D.: Stress in medical practice is inevitable, and it’s essential for doctors to have a mechanism to get rid of that stress. I found that the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique was the natural antidote to the stress of taking care of sick babies and children, including life-and-death situations. Having literally to save lives requires that one be very focused and very cool at any hour of the day or night. I frequently answered emergency calls, particularly in the middle of the night. I had to go from being exhausted and asleep to being able to function with total alertness, literally in a matter of minutes. Practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique was the natural way to get maintain a clear mind and steady focus so I could do the right thing and be successful in taking care of children who were ill.
